Your Black Friday beauty plan: a wish list with boundaries.

By the Viral Beauty editors · October 7, 2026

A practical way to compare gift sets, refill favorites, and avoid buying a discount you will not use.

Make three columns before sale season

Separate replenishments, gifts and experiments. Replenishments are products you already know and will use. Gifts need a recipient and preferences. Experiments get the smallest budget. Put an exact product name, shade, size and maximum total spend in each row.

Compare the exact item

A set, mini, refill and full-size bottle are not interchangeable. Record the amount of each item and which ones you actually want. Divide the total cost by the total amount only when the formulas and units are comparable. A larger bundle may still be worse value if most of it will go unused.

Record your own baseline

Write down the price you personally observe, the retailer and the date. Compare it with the checkout total when a promotion arrives. Include shipping, membership requirements and taxes. We do not label a product as discounted unless a current retailer offer has been verified.

Check gift timing and return terms

Look for delivery estimates, gift receipts, opened-product exclusions and the holiday return deadline. For fragrance, consider a discovery set when you do not know the recipient’s taste. Shade-dependent makeup works best when you know their exact shade.

Set a stopping rule

Decide on a total beauty budget and a maximum number of experimental buys. Keep a little room for a genuine replenishment need. If nothing on your list is a good match, spending nothing is a valid shopping outcome.

Quick answers

Are beauty gift sets always better value?

No. Compare the exact sizes and the products you will use, plus delivery and return terms. Unwanted extras do not make a set more useful.

Make it your own. Collect a few finds that fit your life.
