How to choose a perfume you have never smelled.

By the Viral Beauty editors · October 3, 2026

Notes, concentrations and samples — a practical way to buy fragrance online with fewer regrets.

Fragrance is hard to judge through a screen, yet viral perfumes and body mists sell out online all the time. Learning how fragrances are described, and starting small, turns a blind buy into an informed one.

Learn the note pyramid

Fragrance descriptions are usually split into top notes (what you smell first, often citrus or fresh notes), heart notes (the main character, often florals or spices) and base notes (what lingers, such as vanilla, musk, woods or amber). The base notes tell you most about how a scent will smell an hour later.

Use perfumes you already love as a map

Look up the notes of fragrances, candles or body products you already enjoy. If several share vanilla and caramel, you probably like gourmand scents; if they share bergamot and neroli, you may prefer fresh citrus. Search for new fragrances with similar notes.

Know the format you are buying

Body and hair mists are generally lighter and are made to be reapplied. Eau de toilette is typically lighter than eau de parfum, which is typically lighter than extrait or parfum. The same scent name can come in several formats that smell and last differently, so check which one the product page lists.

Start with a sample or travel size

Many brands and retailers sell discovery sets, samples or travel sizes. Wear a sample on skin for a full day before committing to a full bottle — fragrance changes as it dries and interacts with skin.

Test on skin, not just paper

Paper strips show the top notes well but not how a scent develops on you. Apply to the inner wrist or neck and check after ten minutes, an hour and four hours. If you have sensitive skin, try a small area first.

Keep a scent notebook

Write down what you tried, the notes, how long it lasted and how it made you feel. After a few samples, patterns appear, and your next blind buy gets much easier.

Quick answers

How can I choose a perfume without smelling it?

Compare its listed notes with fragrances you already love, check whether it is a mist, eau de toilette or eau de parfum, and start with a sample or travel size before buying a full bottle.

What is the difference between a body mist and a perfume?

Body and hair mists are usually lighter, lower-concentration formats designed for reapplication. Eau de parfum and parfum are usually more concentrated and longer-lasting.

What are base notes in perfume?

Base notes are the longest-lasting part of a fragrance, such as vanilla, musk, amber or woods. They shape how the scent smells after it has dried down.
