How to shade-match when you are shopping online.
By the Viral Beauty editors · October 3, 2026
A calm, repeatable way to narrow down shades without a counter in sight.
Start from a shade you already own
If a foundation or concealer works for you, note its brand, shade name, and undertone. Many retailers list comparable shades or offer a shade-finder that starts from a product you know.
Look at swatches in daylight
Compare product photos and swatches near a window in natural light rather than under warm indoor bulbs. Look at several skin tones in the swatch set to understand how the range runs.
Plan for a second try
Check sample sizes, mini formats, and the retailer’s policy on opened beauty items before ordering. Knowing your options in advance makes a near-miss shade much less stressful.
