Before you try viral skincare: a calm checklist.
By the Viral Beauty editors · October 3, 2026
A trending serum or cleanser can be a lovely find. Here is how to introduce something new without overwhelming your skin routine.
Skincare videos make new products look transformative overnight. In reality, routines usually work best when they are simple and changes are introduced slowly. This is general, nonmedical guidance — for skin concerns, conditions or reactions, talk to a dermatologist or pharmacist.
Know what you want it to do
Name one goal — for example, a gentler cleanser, more hydration or a lighter moisturizer for summer. A product that matches a goal is easier to evaluate than one bought because it was everywhere.
Read the full ingredient list
Check the brand’s full ingredient list rather than just the hero ingredient. If you already know certain ingredients or fragrance bother you, look for them. If you use active products, check whether the brand suggests avoiding combining them.
Follow the brand’s patch-test guidance
Many brands recommend patch testing a new product before using it on your face. Follow the instructions on the packaging or product page. If you notice irritation, stop using it and seek advice if it does not settle.
Introduce one product at a time
Add one new product and use it for a while before adding another. If something does not agree with your skin, you will know which product it was. Changing several things at once makes that impossible.
Keep sunscreen in the routine
Whatever else changes, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the most widely recommended steps in any routine, especially when using products that can increase sun sensitivity — the product label will say if that applies.
Give it a fair, realistic window
Some products feel nice immediately; others are described by brands as working over weeks. Use the brand’s own guidance on timing, and be wary of any claim of dramatic overnight results.
Quick answers
Should I patch test new skincare?
Many brands recommend it. Follow the patch-test instructions on the product packaging or website, and stop using a product if irritation develops.
How many new skincare products should I try at once?
One at a time is the simplest approach, so you can tell which product your skin likes or does not.
Are viral skincare products worth it?
Some are excellent everyday products. They are worth it when they match a specific goal for your skin, fit your routine and budget, and you introduce them gradually.
